When Julius Voegtli died in 1944, the local media took little notice of his passing. It took more than seventy years for Julius Voegtli’s artistic legacy to be rediscovered. This was not due to chance but to the tireless work of his grandson Hans Vögtli. He never got to know his grandfather personally, but his father told him many exciting stories about Julius Voegtli’s life and work. Therefore, it became almost an obsession to bring his grandfather back from oblivion even at a young age. His prevailing passion was to grant his ancestor the recognition as an artist of distinction and international importance that had eluded him during his lifetime. In 2016, Hans Vögtli addressed the public for the first time. He asked citizens in Malters, Biel, and the surrounding area to help him trace the legacies and paintings of his grandfather. He was met with a surprisingly positive response.
New paintings, drawings, and references were added to the works in his own possession. Cultural institutions in the Biel area also took notice and offered their support. At the turn of the year 2016/17, the ‘Entlebucher Anzeiger’ (newspaper) printed an article titled: ‘Hans Vögtli from Hirschthal is looking for works by his grandfather. The life’s work of the painter Julius Voegtli needs to be completed’. The piece details the efforts of the grandson to retrieve the complete works of Julius Voegtli and make them accessible not only to the Swiss but also to the international art world.
